Batumi Botanical Garden – One of the largest and richest botanical gardens in the world

Post Gonio Asparos Fortress, we were in for a visual treat as there was more nature to be seen. We went to Batumi Botanical Garden which claims to be one of the largest and richest botanical gardens in the whole world. The Batumi Botanical Garden is a 108 hectare area of land 9 km north of the city of Batumi, capital of Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Georgia.

The Batumi Botanical Garden was started by the Russian botanist Andrey Nikolayevich Krasnov (1862-1914), brother of General Pyotr Krasnov, in the 1880s and officially opened on November 3, 1912. He was aided by two skilled gardeners and decorators – the French D’Alphonse and the Georgian Yason Gordeziani. Krasnov died in 1914 and was interred at the garden which still houses his grave and statue.Under the Soviet Union, the garden was further expanded and developed, since 1925, into a principal institution for the study of Caucasian maritime subtropical cultures.

Note : Entry fees for Batumi Botanical Garden is 6 GEL per person. You will be given a map of the entire garden to assist you for your navigation. Another helpful information if you are not ready to walk then you can rent an electric car inside the garden to avoid excessive walking.

As mentioned in my previous posts that Batumi was rain kissed that day. We started our tour to witness enormous collection of plants and trees. It’s location overlooking the Black Sea only makes this attraction even more striking! . A spectacular view for photography lovers.

When our journey was beginning to end, there was something incredible awaiting us. We had just reached the sea side view of the garden. We noticed a small gate which looked like a pathway to the sea. It was actually a railway station. We were skeptical about going near to the gate as we thought it might be locked. We just gave it a try and went near it and fortunately it was not locked.
